History

Dr Smart’s Trust is a charity managed by a Board of Trustees, within the regulations of the Charity Commission established in 1965.

Dr Smart’s Homes were built on 8 acres of land at the bequest of Dr. Francis Gray Smart in 1931, born in 1844 in Tunbridge Wells he was one of three children of Dr John Cass Smart who was born and lived in Hutton Buscel and had a medical practice in Huntriss Row in Scarborough. George Edward Smart was his brother and he also opened a residential home in 1950.

The homes are a fine example of grand 1930’s architecture; attractive and full of character, surrounded by their own spacious gardens, situated in a quiet residential area of Scarborough on bus routes into town and the surrounding area.
